Follow Friday [16]

I haven't done one of these in a while, but Follow Friday is still hosted by Rachel from Parajunkee's View and Alison of Alison Can Read

This week's question is:

"What is your biggest pet peeve when it comes to books?"

Now personally, I don't have anything against Love Triangles (which is something I imagine most people will pick) except for the fact I ALWAYS pick the wrong team. I like the dark, broody, mildly evil guy, which, for some reason, the heroine doesn't. Except for that one time she did. Oh...and that other time..anyway.

I DO have a severe disliking for cliches in plots. I tend to do a massive eyeroll at these (insta-love, 'science partners' absent parents, whatever) but if I like the book enough, I can usually ignore these.

What I really REALLY dislike however, is bad writing. What do I classify as bad? Well, I don't really know. I could name some books I think are badly written...but that would be unfair. Essentially, simplistic writing, lots of 'he said she said', boring descriptions, bad metaphors...anything like that. I'm a bit of a stickler for writing and beautifully written books are my favourite. So yeah, I guess that's my biggest pet peeve.

What about you guys? Does the writing matter to you, or are you more about the plot? Lemme know in the comments and remember to leave a link to your own post!

  1. All these things bother me too, but, like you, I can usually overlook them and continue with the book. Bad writing, though? Nope! Won't do it. It's the one thing that makes me put the book down.

  2. I can agree with all of those as well!! My top pick though leaned more towards the "insta-love". Can't stand that!

  4. I can't stand when I pick the wrong guy in the love triangle! I can't enjoy the story as much afterwards, especially if it's a series! It does create some great inner conflict though, when I think she might start to sway towards my choice and then she breaks my heart by staying with (in my opinion) the wrong choice!

  5. Ugh, I am so not a fan of bad writing either. It really makes me crazy, and most times I won't bother finishing a book because of it. :)

    Have a great weekend, Cait!

  7. Hey Cait, just stoppin by. I totally agree on the simplistic writing. An author should be recognizable by their writing style, sadly a lot of books could seem to be written by anyone because the language, plot, etc. is so basic. have a good weekend ;)
